Once I started knitting, it was inevitable that I’d start making tools and accessories for the fiber community. As a beginning knitter, I’d forget to make buttonholes in sweaters. When I started knitting lace, I hated tying big knots in the shawls I made, because the knots obscured the lace patters, and there was always the possibility of causing damage to the delicate yarn used to make the shawl. So I started to make fanciful shawl pins in a variety of styles to secure the garments, scarves and shawls I was making. Inspired by Iron Age cloak fasteners, I then began to design penannular brooches, which are 2-piece shawl pins. Because the pin stem is attached to the outer ring, you won’t lose the pin stem, and the brooch lays flat against the material, allowing the shawl or scarf to drape well. If you are unfamiliar with how to use a penannular brooch, this video provides a quick lesson: https://youtu.be/GOPVMBT9tE0.
A wide variety of penannular brooches and other shawl pins are available on Etsy.
